Professional Profile
Susan has been associated with Stewart, Esten since her call to the Bar in 1993. She initially earned a reputation as a family law lawyer, although she has received a broad range of experience in other areas of law such as estate litigation, criminal law, and a wide range of civil and commercial disputes. Susan now focuses her practice on personal injury and medical malpractice litigation. As one of the few female lawyers in Simcoe County to practice in these fields, she offers an alternative to women who may be more comfortable discussing their physical difficulties with a female lawyer.
Susan has represented clients at all levels of court, including the Ontario Court of Appeal, and is a member of the Ontario Trial Lawyers' Association. She has been a presenter at continuing legal education programs offered within the legal community.
Susan is also an experienced mediator. While maintaining a fundamental respect for the civil justice system, she developed an interest in mediation as a natural growth of observing the difficult experiences of individuals in the courtroom and within the legal system. She has completed mediation training certified by the Law Society of Upper Canada and the ADR (Alternate Dispute Resolution) Institute of Ontario, and holds a diploma in advanced mediation from Harvard Law School. She is the president of the Ontario Association for Family Mediation. She has successfully mediated disputes between hundreds of separating couples both privately and through the Mediation Centre of Simcoe County.
