A Brief History of Stewart, Esten

Stewart

Hamilton Douglas Stewart was the son of Charles Douglas Stewart, the Lawyer General for St. Vincent in the British West Indies. Hamilton Stewart started out with Featherstone Osler of Bradford. In 1871 he established a practice at 21 Owen Street in Barrie. Hamilton’s son Douglas Maxwell Stewart subsequently worked with him and his grandson Charles Douglas (“Carl”) Stewart joined his father in 1936. Douglas retired in 1944. Carl Stewart became a Judge of the Supreme Court of Ontario in 1953 and died in 1972.

Esten

George Hutchison Esten was the son of James Hutchison Esten, the Chief Librarian at Osgoode Hall Law School and the Secretary of the Law Society of Upper Canada. In 1921 George and his son Maurice formed the partnership of Esten & Esten.

The Making of a Firm - Stewart, Esten

On January 1, 1951 Carl Stewart and Maurice Esten joined their firms to form the partnership of Stewart, Esten. The firm operated from the original site established by Hamilton Stewart on Owen Street until 1978. On February 28, 1978 the firm moved to its present location at 100 Collier Street, a modern building constructed for use by the partners. Mr. Esten retired from practice in 1982 and passed away in 1986.

On June 15, 1985 the firm amalgamated with the Barrie law firm of Kenny, Bigelow & Reed, and became one of the largest firms in Simcoe County.
